In our spare time, we are starting to create a list of links to the Web sites of local businesses, visitor attractions, and helpful online resources. Here is what we have put together so far:
Interesting Places to Visit
- Bolsover Castle – Located on Castle Street, at the top of the hill behind our shop, this historic English Heritage property is a short walk from our front door. The large Riding House, with an impressive timber framed roof, has been called one of the “finest surviving indoor riding schools” in the country. The Great Hall is in ruins, but many of the paintings, wooden carvings, and ornate fireplaces inside the inner keep or Little Castle have been restored. And, the restoration of the Venus Fountain (called the “rudest” fountain in the country) with water “flowing through” cherubs and heraldic beasts was recognised in 2004 with a Marsh Fountain Society Award.
- Sutton Scarsdale Hall – The sandstone walls, Corinthian columns, and carved stone pediments are no longer protected by a roof, which presents a unique opportunity to see the structural skeleton of this huge Baroque style mansion. It is another English Heritage site that is only about 10 minutes outside of Bolsover.
- Malfoy Manor – Better known to us “muggles” as Hardwick Hall, this huge Elizabethan country house was featured in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It was designed and built for Bess of Hardwick; the second richest woman in England at the time, after Queen Elizabeth I. The hall contains a large collection of tapestries and embroideries, with needlework dating from the late 16th century. Opening times and prices can be found on the National Trust Web site.
- Creswell Crags – A series of caves in this limestone gorge contain stone tools, animal remains, rock art and stone etchings or engravings believed to be left by our ancestors between 10,000 and 50,000 years ago during the last ice age. This museum and visitor centre is about 6 miles from our shop.
- Bolsover Walk – A description of a 6 mile walk through the countryside of North East Derbyshire between Bolsover Castle and Sutton Scarsdale Hall. Be sure to add a stop at BEANS for a bite to eat before or after your hike.
